Please help, cell phone question...?

So, i have alltel, and my brother has verizon

He has an old phone, its a motorola i think?

and he was wondering if he could just give me that phone and i can use it with my alltel plan,

OR

if he could buy a new phone, and give me his old one.

How do i know if i can use it with alltel?

it would need to be unlocked for it to work on alltel. all carriers lock the phones they sell so that they only work for them but people have unlocked phones to use on any carrier. u just have to make sure that its the same technology a GSM will not work with CDMA. and vice versa. call the alltel people and explain it to them First, he should call Verizon and ask them for the unlock code and instructions. Otherwise, you would need to Google "cell phone unlock service" and pay $30 to one of those sites for the same thing. You see, a branded phone from one carrier will not work with a SIM card of another carrier. An unlocked phone will play with pretty much any provider.

You might also call Alltel and ask if they can generate the code so that you can use it on their service. Oh, FYI, the unlock code is generated from the IMEI number of the phone.
